Ruben Amorim Named New Manchester United Head Coach, Joining November 11 as Erik ten Hag’s Replacement

Rúben Amorim

Manchester United has confirmed Ruben Amorim as their new head coach, with the Portuguese tactician set to take charge on November 11, replacing Erik ten Hag. Amorim, 39, will depart Sporting CP after United paid an additional €1m (£840,000) beyond his €10m (£8.4m) release clause to secure his early release from the club. Amorim’s first match as United’s head coach is scheduled for November 24 against Ipswich Town, airing live on Sky Sports.

Amorim’s contract with United runs until June 2027, with an option for an additional year. Manchester United expressed enthusiasm over his appointment, highlighting Amorim’s accolades both as a player and a coach, including two Primeira Liga titles with Sporting, the first of which ended the club’s 19-year title drought in 2021.

Until Amorim’s arrival, Ruud van Nistelrooy, serving as interim coach, will continue to guide United through several crucial fixtures, including a Chelsea showdown this weekend and two more matches leading into the international break. Van Nistelrooy recently led United to a 3-1 victory over Leicester and will be at the helm until Amorim assumes full duties.

Amorim has been widely sought-after across Europe, having built an impressive reputation for leading Sporting to multiple league titles and keeping them at the top of the Primeira Liga. Notably, Liverpool, Chelsea, and West Ham previously expressed interest in securing his services. Although Amorim remained reserved about his future earlier in the week, it soon became clear that he was keen on the opportunity at Old Trafford.

In the immediate term, Amorim will conclude his responsibilities with Sporting, including an upcoming Champions League fixture against Manchester City.
