A new Dublin bus route, W6, is set to launch next month, enhancing connectivity across Kildare and west Dublin. The route will link Maynooth, Celbridge, Newcastle, and Tallaght, providing a much-needed transit option for commuters in these areas.
The project faced delays due to the widening of Hazelhatch Bridge, but Fine Gael TD Emer Higgins recently announced that the W6 route is on track to be fully operational by the end of November. Sharing the news on social media, Higgins expressed excitement for commuters, particularly students from Rathcoole, Saggart, and Newcastle, who will benefit from direct access to Celbridge and Maynooth.
“This is something I have been pushing for during my time as your local TD, and I know this will be a huge boost for residents,” Higgins stated. “While there have been delays, we’re finally seeing progress, and I’ll continue to work with the NTA to ensure a smooth rollout.”
The W6 route is part of Dublin’s BusConnects Network Redesign, specifically designed as an orbital route to improve transport links across western and southern Dublin suburbs without requiring travel through the city center. As part of the Phase 5B launch, the route is intended to give residents more efficient options for commuting to work, school, and essential services, increasing accessibility and convenience.
Over the past year, Dublin’s bus network has undergone significant transformations as part of the ongoing BusConnects initiative. This comprehensive redesign of the city’s public transport system aims to create a more efficient, reliable, and user-friendly network. Key developments in 2023 included the introduction of new orbital routes, such as the W4 and S2, which offer suburban connectivity without the need to travel through the city center. Additionally, increased frequency, extended operating hours, and improvements in evening and weekend services have made public transport more accessible for residents across the city. The initiative reflects Dublin’s commitment to sustainable urban mobility, supporting a growing population with modern, efficient transit options.
In addition to Newcastle, Saggart, Citywest, Tallaght, Liffey Valley, Lucan, Blanchardstown, Hazelhatch, Maynooth, and Celbridge, the W6 route also supports Dublin’s broader transit strategy to increase capacity, frequency, and availability of public transport services in the evenings and on weekends. This new service is expected to significantly benefit communities across the region, enhancing overall connectivity and quality of life.
