IRS Sets 2027 Standard Deductions and Tax Benefit Limits

The 2027 standard deduction rises to $33,200 for joint filers and $16,600 for single filers. The IRS also updated tax and workplace benefit limits.

The IRS announced higher standard deductions and other inflation adjustments for tax year 2027 on November 5. The standard deduction will be $33,200 for married couples filing jointly and $16,600 for single filers. The agency says the changes generally apply to returns filed in 2028.

The announcement covers almost 70 tax provisions, including tax brackets and workplace health spending limits. For households reviewing benefits during enrollment season, one figure to check is the new $3,500 limit on employee salary reductions for health flexible spending arrangements. Plans that allow unused funds to carry over can permit a maximum carryover of $700.

The tax year is important when comparing these numbers with an existing return or a benefits form. A 2027 figure belongs to the 2027 rules. Keep the year printed on each document in view when you compare an amount announced this month with one already in your records.

The standard deduction by filing status

  • Married filing jointly: $33,200.
  • Single or married filing separately: $16,600.
  • Head of household: $24,925.

The IRS describes a deduction as an amount subtracted from income before the tax is calculated. That means the standard deduction changes the amount of income subject to tax. The dollar value of the deduction and the dollar amount of a tax refund are separate figures.

Taxpayers generally compare the standard deduction with their eligible itemized deductions. Itemizing means reporting qualifying expenses individually. IRS guidance explains that which method is available or useful depends on the taxpayer’s situation. The announcement supplies the new standard amounts, while the filing rules determine how they apply to a particular return.

What the bracket figures describe

The seven ordinary income tax rates remain 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. Under the published 2027 schedule, the 12% bracket for single filers begins above $12,800 of taxable income, and the 22% bracket begins above $52,025. For joint filers, those thresholds are $25,600 and $104,050.

The schedule applies rates to portions of taxable income. When reading the table, identify the filing status first, then read across the corresponding income ranges. Comparing a salary directly with one of those ranges skips the deductions used to arrive at taxable income.

Credits and workplace benefits use different rules

The maximum child tax credit rises to $2,300 for 2027, with up to $1,800 potentially refundable. A credit reduces tax under its eligibility rules. A refundable credit can produce a refund even when it exceeds the tax owed, while a deduction reduces income before the tax calculation.

The IRS also set the monthly qualified transportation and parking limits at $350. Those figures and the health FSA figures are workplace benefit limits, so look for the relevant benefit and plan year when reading enrollment materials. An employer’s plan documents explain the choices that plan offers.

The full revenue procedure is linked below for readers who need a provision beyond the main household figures. It includes the detailed schedules, limits and effective dates. Keeping that document beside the IRS announcement makes it easier to distinguish the amount being indexed from the separate eligibility rules for claiming it.
