Bombardier Challenger 650: Why a Jet With Roots in 1980 Is Still in Demand

The Bombardier Challenger 650 has the widest cabin in its class and a 4,000nm range. Why medevac and charter operators still choose it.

The Bombardier Challenger 650 belongs to a jet family that first entered service in 1980, yet operators keep choosing it. In September 2026, a brand-new example even joined one of Europe’s best-known air ambulance fleets.

The jet, registered D-ADAC, flew from Bombardier’s production site in Montreal to Nuremberg in Germany. It is also the first of two ordered by Aero-Dienst, the air ambulance operator owned by German motoring club ADAC.

It is due to enter service in October, so it will start flying patients before the end of 2026. A second aircraft will follow in May 2027, and together they will replace two ageing Learjet 60XRs in the medical fleet.

Bombardier Challenger 650 at a Glance

  • Class: large-cabin business jet
  • Cabin: the widest in its class, at 2.41m (7ft 11in)
  • Range: 4,000 nautical miles with six passengers
  • Passengers: up to 12
  • Engines: two GE CF34-3B turbofans
  • In service: since 2015, as successor to the Challenger 605

A Long Family Tree

To begin with, the original Challenger 600 entered service in 1980. Over the years, it evolved through a series of upgraded models. Later, Bombardier even turned the design into the CRJ family of regional airliners.

Then, in late 2014, Bombardier announced the Challenger 650 as the successor to the Challenger 605. It entered service in 2015. It kept the proven airframe but added a new cabin, a new flight deck and slightly more powerful engines.

Across all versions, the Challenger 600 series has become one of the best-selling large business jets ever, with more than 1,000 delivered.

The Bombardier Challenger 650 Cabin

Above all, the cabin is the selling point. In fact, Bombardier says it is the widest in its class, at 2.41m (7ft 11in) wide and 1.83m (6ft) high.

From the cockpit divider to the rear, it measures 7.80m (25ft 7in), and it can seat up to 12 passengers. Crew and passengers can also reach the baggage area during flight, which helps on long trips.

That width also explains why air ambulance services like it. After all, there is room for a stretcher, medical equipment and a care team. Switzerland’s Rega, for example, already flies the type as an ambulance.

Range and Performance

Specifically, Bombardier quotes a maximum range of 4,000 nautical miles (7,408km) with six passengers and two crew. That covers non-stop flights such as New York to London, as well as coast-to-coast trips across the United States.

Meanwhile, two General Electric CF34-3B engines power the jet, and each produces 9,220lb of thrust.

For UK travellers, however, one detail stands out. The jet is certified for steep approaches, so it can use London City Airport. That airport is one of the most convenient in Europe for business travel, but also one of the most demanding.

Flight Deck and Reliability

Pilots fly the jet with the Bombardier Vision flight deck. It is based on Collins Aerospace avionics, with four large displays.

In addition, the package includes synthetic vision and dual flight management systems. It also supports modern precision approaches, while Collins MultiScan weather radar completes the set.

Bombardier promotes reliability heavily, too. It quotes dispatch reliability above 99.9% and says the jet has longer maintenance intervals than its rivals. For charter and medical operators, which need aircraft ready at short notice, those numbers matter as much as comfort.

Competition Is Thinning

Overall, the large-cabin market has changed a lot in recent years.

Dassault’s Falcon 900LX, a three-engine rival, is now in its final delivery year, according to analysts at Forecast International. Observers also point to twin-engine competitors, including the Challenger 650 and Gulfstream’s G400, as one reason its market has shrunk.

At the same time, Bombardier has said little about a direct successor. Instead, it has focused on the super-midsize Challenger 3500 and the ultra-long-range Global 7500 and 8000.

Why the Bombardier Challenger 650 Still Works

On paper, a design with roots in the late 1970s should struggle against clean-sheet rivals. In practice, however, the Bombardier Challenger 650 benefits from decades of refinement and a large global support network. Its cabin is also something newer jets in its price range still struggle to match.

The new aircraft joining ADAC’s fleet shows that buyers who need a dependable, spacious jet are still ready to sign for one.
