HondaJet APMG S: The Upgrade That Brings Early HondaJets Up to Date

The HondaJet APMG S upgrade gives early HondaJets Elite S steering, faster avionics and 300lb more take-off weight. What owners get.

The HondaJet APMG S is an upgrade package that brings the earliest HondaJets closer to the standard of the newer Elite S. For owners, it offers a way to modernise an aircraft without buying a new one.

Business jets age differently from cars. A ten-year-old aircraft is often only part-way through its working life. However, the technology inside it can start to feel a generation behind much sooner.

Honda Aircraft Company announced the package on 18 December 2025. Its timing is no accident, because the first HondaJet deliveries are now about ten years old.

HondaJet APMG S at a Glance

  • For: the HondaJet Classic and jets that already have the APMG modification
  • Main feature: the Advanced Steering Augmentation System from the Elite S
  • Avionics: new hardware and software with faster processing
  • Performance: 300lb (136kg) more maximum take-off weight
  • Approvals: FAA certified, with Mexico following in May 2026
  • Where: Greensboro and 21 authorised service centres worldwide

Who the HondaJet APMG S Is For

The package covers two groups of aircraft. First, there is the original HondaJet, now called the HondaJet Classic. Second, there are jets that have already received the earlier APMG modification. The letters stand for Advanced Performance Modification Group.

In other words, these are the aircraft that launched the programme. The HondaJet gained its US type certificate in December 2015, and deliveries followed soon after. Since then, Honda has added newer versions such as the Elite S and the current Elite II, so the oldest jets have fallen behind in several areas.

What the Upgrade Changes

The centrepiece is the Advanced Steering Augmentation System, or ASAS. It is one of the key features of the HondaJet Elite S. In short, it improves directional control and crosswind handling, which helps most during take-off and landing.

In addition, owners get new avionics hardware and software. Honda says this speeds up processing. Just as importantly, it gives older jets room to receive future upgrades instead of staying on an older platform.

There is a practical gain too. Aircraft with the HondaJet APMG S package get a 300lb (136kg) increase in maximum take-off weight over the unmodified jet. So, in everyday flying, that extra margin can mean more fuel or more payload on a given trip.

Pilots also get clearer graphics for weight and balance planning. It is a small change, but it makes pre-flight preparation easier.

Where and When Owners Can Get It

The FAA approved the package for US-registered aircraft before launch. Then, in May 2026, Mexico became the next country to certify it, and Honda expects more approvals to follow.

Honda carries out the work at its service centre in Greensboro, North Carolina, as well as at 21 authorised service centres worldwide.

At Greensboro, owners can also book an interior refurbishment at the same time. As a result, the aircraft only leaves service once.

In addition, Honda has already upgraded several pre-owned jets, which it sells through its own pre-owned programme. Upgraded used HondaJets are due to go on sale in the United States during 2026.

Why Honda Is Doing This

Amod Kelkar leads Honda Aircraft’s commercial operations and its Echelon programme. He has presented the package as a way for existing customers to enjoy the technology of newer HondaJets as the tenth anniversary of the first delivery approaches.

There is also clear business logic. For example, upgrades help to protect resale values and keep owners loyal. They also give Honda’s pre-owned programme a more attractive product to sell.

Meanwhile, Honda’s next aircraft is taking longer than planned. Initially, Honda expected the larger HondaJet Echelon to fly in 2026. Now, according to the latest schedule, first flight is due in 2028, with certification and first deliveries around 2031.

When it arrives, the 11-seat Echelon is designed to be the first single-pilot light jet able to fly non-stop across the United States. Until then, the current HondaJet family has to keep customers happy for several more years.

A Model for Other Manufacturers

Factory-backed upgrade packages are not new in business aviation. Still, they are becoming more important as new aircraft programmes grow longer and more expensive.

For owners of early jets, the HondaJet APMG S package offers a simple choice. Rather than trading in for a newer model, they can bring their aircraft closer to current standards and keep flying the jet they already know.

Frequently Asked Questions
